As rivers across the state recede, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) is working to assess the damage from recent flooding.

GEMA Deputy Director Harlan Proveaux says the agency's regional field offices are taking the lead on damage assessment.

"We look at homes. We look at roadways, and we actually put a dollar amount to the assessment," he says.

Their efforts are focused in the counties in north and central Georgia named in Governor Nathan Deal's state of emergency last week.

Once the assessment is finished, Proveaux says GEMA will determine how it can provide resources on a state level, and work to request federal resources as needed.

He says he expects GEMA's damage survey to be completed by the end of January.
