The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office says Sheriff Al St. Lawrence’s health has not deteriorated and he’s still in command, despite reports to the contrary. A spokeswoman for the sheriff confirms he is fighting cancer. But she says he’s not “incapacitated,” as local media reported earlier, nor is he on hospice care.

Chief Deputy Roy Harris told WTKS-FM Wednesday morning that he’s in daily communication with the sheriff. "The important decisions that are being made are being made by Sheriff St. Lawrence," he said, "so at this particular time he is still very much in command of this agency."

Harris added that the sheriff tailgated at the Georgia-Florida football game a few weeks ago.

The sheriff’s spokeswoman says if his involvement in day-to-day operations changes, the office will notify the public.
