Georgia could be getting a third deepwater port under a new proposal. The company Port of St. Mary’s LLC has applied for a zoning change at a former paper mill in St. Mary’s. The application aims to make way for a new port facility.
The plans call for a barge dock and ship berths, as well as railroad facilities, the Brunswick News reports.
The company says it plans to include an environmental conservation area to help preserve wildlife habitat - including a colony of wood storks, which is a threatened species. The tract of land is more than 700 acres.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers would be involved in approving the proposed port.
