Deal Wants To Use Lottery Reserve To Reverse Pre-K Cuts
Primary Content
Gov. Nathan Deal has proposed spending $50 million to reverse cuts made to the state's pre-kindergarten program.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the specifics of the plan are still being developed. The Republican governor said the funding would reduce class sizes and increase pay for teachers and assistant teachers.
Deal and state lawmakers cut the pre-kindergarten school year in 2011 by 20 days to save money. The maximum class size was raised from 20 to 22 students.
The 180-day school calendar has been restored. But class sizes remain the same.
Deal said he plans to get the extra funding from a lottery reserve fund. The fund had grown to roughly $350 million by the end of 2014
