Leopolds

Kristopher Monroe, freelance writer and Art Rise Savannah board president, and Amy Condon, Savannah Magazine associate editor, offer up some ways to have fun in Savannah this weekend.

Amy’s picks:

-As the Savannah Voice Festival continues, get a preview of a brand-new opera made just for Savannah. The opera brings to life the story of Alice Ryley, who was hanged in Wright Square during the colonial era and is said to haunt the square, searching for her baby. The full opera will premiere Oct. 30. Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; $75 advance tickets.

-Celebrate the 96th birthday of Leopold’s Ice Cream with the Savannah favorite’s annual block party on Broughton Street. Enjoy live entertainment, family activities - and delicious ice cream for just 96 cents. This year’s Kid Zone will take donations for Blessings in a Bookbag. Saturday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., birthday cake at 3 p.m.; free.

-If you missed this summer’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream - or just want to see the woodland comedy in the great outdoors - this weekend is your chance. Savannah Stage Company is putting on a free encore performance of the show in Forsyth Park. Check out the famous, tangled romantic comedy in true Shakespeare in the Park style. Saturday, 6 p.m.; free.

Kristopher’s picks:

-Discover your new favorite artist at a mini gallery hop Friday, featuring exhibitions of three SCAD students. Check out the openings at Non-Fiction Gallery, Oglethorpe Gallery and Sulfur Studios - and be sure to get your gallery hop passport signed to collect a gift bag from each show. Friday, 6-9 p.m.; free.

-See some of the wonders of the Telfair Museums’ collection at two ongoing exhibitions. “Prints from the Collection” runs through July 2016 and features works by artists like Renoir and Degas. “Eclectic Encounters,” open until Feb. 18, displays works in the collection that haven’t been seen - and as the name suggests, it’s a varied exhibit. Find details here.

-Same-sex couples planning Savannah weddings can check out their options at the second annual LGBT Wedding Expo on Sunday at the Hyatt Regency. The event will feature a selection of LGBT-friendly wedding vendors as well as a mass wedding - a change from last year’s mass commitment ceremony, since same-sex marriage is now legal in Georgia. Sunday, expo 3-6:30 p.m., wedding ceremony 7 p.m., reception 7:30-9 p.m.; free.
