GPB Savannah Bureau Chief Sarah McCammon has accepted an appointment as a political reporter with NPR’s election unit to cover the 2016 campaign.

McCammon joined GPB in 2013 and will be taking a leave of absence from her position until after the election. She has contributed frequently to NPR news reports and programs such as “Marketplace.” Most recently, McCammon traveled to Charleston, South Carolina to cover the shootings at Emanuel AME Church for NPR and contributed to reports on Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal’s announcement that he’s seeking the presidential nomination.
"I'm so proud of the team at GPB Savannah, and as hard as it will be to leave for a while, covering the presidential election for NPR is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said McCammon. “I am so thrilled to be joining an incredible group of journalists at NPR who will be bringing election news to public radio listeners around the country. "

McCammon has garnered many accolades for reporting and anchoring. During the Georgia Associated Press Media Editors awards presented earlier this month, she won Best General Reporting Radio for her coverage of the Georgia Ports Authority labor disputes. She also won Best Series Reporting Radio and an honorable mention for Best Anchor and/or Reporter.
In making the announcement about the newest members of NPR’s 2016 Election Unit, NPR News Washington Editor Beth Donovan said of McCammon “She’s a dogged reporter, a graceful writer, and a bright two-way on our air.”

McCammon will join Tamara Keith and Don Gonyea as one of NPR’s lead candidate reporters.

"We're thrilled that NPR has tapped Sarah for such an important position," GPB Vice President of Radio Tanya Ott said. "Our mission has always been to cover the stories of Georgia and the South for listeners here and beyond. The South plays such a critical role in presidential politics. It will be nice to have someone with experience covering southern politics on the ground on the NPR team."
