forsyth farmers market

Rene Teran, executive director of WellFED and commissioner of cultural affairs for the City of Savannah, and Sara Lane, director of Visit Tybee offer up some ways to have fun and beat the heat on the Georgia coast this weekend.

Rene’s picks:

-It’s the height of the season for Georgia produce, and there are plenty of places to find some - and not just downtown. The Forsyth Farmer’s Market runs every Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., in the park. Wilmington Island’s market is also Saturdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the parking lot of Islands Community Church. Richmond Hill’s takes place Tuesdays, 2 p.m.-7 p.m., at J.F. Gregory Park.

-And be sure to check out the mother of all farmer’s markets: the Georgia Grown Showcase at the state farmer’s market on US 80. The event features vendors from all over the state, selling everything from fruits and veggies to shrimp and salsa. Saturday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; free.

-Learn about efforts to preserve Georgia’s forests at SOS Forest Fun Day, presented by a host of local advocacy groups. The even in Forsyth Park will feature games for kids and speakers for grown-ups to learn about how the European energy market uses Georgia wood products. It will culminate in the forming of a human banner. Friday, 12-6 p.m.; free.

-Get your relaxation on while checking out the latest exhibit at Sulfur Studios, “Bodies of Work.” It features art from two local yogis, who will each lead a yoga workshop during the exhibition as well. Exhibit Wednesday through Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Reception Saturday, 6-9 p.m. Yoga workshops Saturday, 1-3:30 p.m. and Sunday, 3-4:30 p.m.; $18 per workshop or $30 for both.

Sara’s Tybee tips:

-The heat and humidity is enough to drive anyone to the beach. If you go, be sure to leave time for always-tight parking on Tybee - and bring along your wallet to pay for parking as well. Street parking is available on much of the island, along with several lots.

-Always carry your litter with you when you leave the beach. Police have been cracking down on littering, which can pose a threat to marine animals who sometimes mistake trash for food. Glass is also illegal on the beach.

-Don’t bring the family dog with you to the beach, where pups aren’t allowed. But fido can run around in one of the island’s two dog parks. Pets are allowed on Fort Pulaski’s trails as well.

-The fun continues after the sun goes down. Tybee can be a great place to watch the sunset, and many of the island’s restaurants and bars offer live music. Tybee Island Social Club offers live music on weekend nights, plus the Bluegrass Brunch every Sunday, featuring Pavin’ Gravy. Bands playing at North Beach Grill and Huc A Poos this weekend include City Hotel, Bears and Co. and the Deltaz. Find a full list of Tybee restaurants and attractions here.

-Looking ahead to next week, celebrate Independence Day at the beach with Tybee’s July 3 fireworks, beginning at nightfall on the pier.
