Earth Wind and Fire / The Conmunity

Visit Savannah social media manager Lauren Cleland and Do Savannah editor Heather Henley offer up some fun events happening in the area this weekend.

Lauren’s picks:

-Celebrate June with the monthly First Friday fireworks display down by the river. The light show will dazzle over River Street while regional artisans sell their wares in Rousakis Plaza. Friday, 9:30 p.m.; free.

-Kick off the summer festival season on the riverfront with Blues, Jazz & BBQ, running all weekend at Rousakis Plaza on River Street. Enjoy the music of area favorite bands like Velvet Caravan, Bottles & Cans and AJ Ghent while gorging on delicious barbecue. Friday 4-10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; free.

-Spend your Sunday dancing to some of the best music around when Earth, Wind & Fire plays the Johnny Mercer Theatre. The 1970s legends still put on quite a show, and they’ll be performing some of their well-loved hits. Sunday, 7:30 p.m.; $40.50-80.50.

Heather’s picks:

-If you’re looking for a lower-key way to mark the start of June, try First Friday for Folk Music at First Presbyterian Church. Presented by the Savannah Folk Music Society, the monthly event is celebrating its 19th anniversary. Society president Chris Desa and local favorite Roy Swindelle will perform. Friday, 7:30-10 p.m.; $5 suggested donation.

-Spend your Saturday at this year’s first Juneteenth celebration, presented on Ellis Square by Blessings in a Book Bag. The event celebrates the day 150 years ago when slaves in Texas first learned of their emancipation. It will feature free health screenings and fun exercise classes, dance and music performances and more. Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; free.

-Keep the summer vibes going strong with Southbound’s Summertime Brews and Tunes party on Saturday. Sample the latest brews while enjoying music from Waits and Co., Georgia Mountain String Band and Black Water Choir. Saturday, 2 p.m.; $20.
