Atlanta police have arrested one of their own after they say he purposely let a murder suspect escape.

A police report shows Officer Tommy Williams was arrested May 21. He faces charges of violation of oath of public office, obstruction of an officer and hindering apprehension of a criminal.

Police say Williams was suspended without pay and relieved of duty.

A police report says Williams allowed a murder suspect to escape through the window of a house while other officers were trying to catch him.

Officers caught the suspect a short time later. The report says the suspect told officers Williams let him escape and that he knew the officer.

Williams' lawyer did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
