Heavy Pets

Amy Paige Condon, associate editor of Savannah Magazine, and Kristopher Monroe, freelance writer and president of the Art Rise Savannah board offer up some fun events in Coastal Georgia this Memorial Day weekend.

Kristopher’s picks:

-Celebrate the second anniversary of Southbound Brewery on Friday with live music from the Heavy Pets, food for purchase from Molly MacPherson’s and Southbound’s signature local brews. They’ll even be bringing back a few throwback favorites for the occasion. Friday, 6:30 p.m.; $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

-Compete in a different sort of 5K Friday night: the Nonstop Fitness Glow Run. Run two laps around Lake Mayer while make your way through an inflatable obstacle course - then finish on a 24-foot slide. And it’s at night, so be sure to wear your best glow-in-the-dark gear. Friday, 9:30 p.m.; $30, free for kids 10 and under with a paid adult.

Amy’s picks:

-Start the weekend off with music at Trinity United Methodist’s spring 2015 Thursday Night Opry. The show in the church’s sanctuary will feature Rachel Shaner, Clouds & Satellites and Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen. Thursday, doors at 7 p.m., show at 7:30; $10.

-If you’re in the market for a bike, check out the Savannah Bicycle Campaign’s first-ever bike sale. They’re offering everything from the vintage to the high-end in a range of frame sizes. Proceeds benefit the New Standard Cycles program, which provides refurbished bikes to area residents who need them. Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

-Enjoy the sunny weather from the water on Saturday with Ogeechee River Keeper’s guided paddle. The seven-mile route explores the river from Scarboro Landing to Rocky Ford and is suitable for beginner to intermediate paddlers. Saturday, 9 a.m.; free for members, $35 for non-members, $30 extra to rent a canoe or $20 to rent a kayak.

-Take the kids to learn about all things bug at the Savannah Children’s Museum’s Bug Fest on Saturday. They can explore kids’ activities, check out bug specimens and learn from special guests Scribble Art Studios, Savannah Bee Company and Armstrong State University’s Entomology Club. Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; $10 for non-members, free for Coastal Heritage Society members.
