The Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security is leading the action to prepare Savannah citizens in the case of a hurricane.

Tuesday morning several agencies and organizations including the DOT attended Hurrex 2015.

The event is a faux scenario exercise designed to help groups respond efficiently during a potential storm.

GEMA worked toward streamlining the evacuation process by planning escape routes and allocating public resources like buses on a large floor sized map.

GEMA/Homeland security Director Jim Butterworth says the general population should also be planning.

“We always need to be expecting a hurricane…the Georgia coastal area has not been drastically impacted by a hurricane in 100 years but who knows if that might happen in the next 12 months or 5 or 10 years from now."

Dennis Jones with Chatham EMA encouraged the public to have an emergency communication plan with family members and an emergency kit.

“We want to encourage people to have an emergency kit, you want to make sure you take into account your pets as well, any special considerations for your pets. Make sure you have some entertainment options for your children, in additional to the necessities of basic food and water. Any perishables you may have you need to know when they may expire."

In the case of a hurricane, speakers of at the event said all lanes of I-16 in Savannah will most likely have traffic flow in the same direction to allow more people on the road. The goal evacuation time is 25 hours.
