Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp says the state's election director has resigned at his request.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports Kemp said Friday that Linda Ford had stepped down because of an "honest mistake" in which nearly 8,000 Georgia voters had their status changed from "inactive" to "cancelled" in late February 2014.

While it's common for Kemp's office to update Georgia voter rolls that way, this batch of voters had their status changed within 90 days of the May 2014 primaries. That's not allowed.

Kemp says his office found one Richmond County voter who had problems as a result of the change. He said "one is too many."

Ford served as elections director since 2010. Ann Hicks, a former elections director who had retired, will replace Ford temporarily.
