Gov. Nathan Deal J. Harold Harrison Education Commons Grand Opening

Georgia would become one of several states authorized to take over schools that Gov. Nathan Deal has called "chronically failing" in a recently introduced plan.

But the Republican will need to hold members of his party while attracting Democrats. Constitutional amendments take two-thirds approval before a statewide vote in 2016 as planned.

He will also need to placate some school officials already frustrated by the proposal. Some superintendents say the state can be more helpful by restoring education cuts and assisting districts with their own approach.

But others welcome a fresh perspective.

Senate Democrats plan to roll out their own proposal this week. House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams declined to comment on the proposal but says she wants to learn more about student, parent and teacher experiences in other states.
