Stephanie Mills is headed to Macon and so is The Festival Of Camelias. Huffington Post film critic Jackie K. Cooper and local musician Betsy Fitzgerald keep their eyes on things to do in Middle Georgia. Here are their top pics!

Jackie's List
1. The Macon Civic Club – Heartbreak Hotel, February 4 – 7. 7:30 PM – Grand Opera House – 100 local businessmen and their wives. Comedy, Music and Dance.

2. February 7 – free admission – The Festival of Camelias – Massee Lane Gardens, Fort Valley. Tour the gardens and attend special events throughout the day. 10 – 4:30

Here are Betsy’s Picks:
All That Jazz featuring Stephanie Mills

The Tubman African American Museum’s premier fundraising event, All That Jazz, will celebrate its 19th year of noteworthy parties featuring great musicians. This year is no different with headliner Stephanie Mills on stage. Although she is a legendary Grammy and American Music Award winning recording artist with five best selling albums and ten Billboard #1 singles, I will always know her as Dorothy in The Wiz, an African-American adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. The only seats available for this hot ticket event are in the balcony but they are a very reasonable $25, with proceeds supporting the museum.

Letter from a Birmingham Jail
Presented by the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings

An extraordinary program, one that I believe will resonate in Macon and beyond for years to come, will feature Macon’s own world-renowned violinist Robert McDuffie and actress/playwright Anna Deavere Smith (who I adore in the celebrated TV series The West Wing) as part of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings’ opening festivities for the Center’s new home. “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” will feature Ms. Smith, accompanied by McDuffie, reading Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s April 1963 letter. She will also portray other important figures from the Civil Rights movement. The event is free and open to all BUT you must acquire your tickets through Mercer Ticket Sales prior to the event. I have been warned that they expect a “sell-out” and tickets must be picked up in person at The Grand Opera House’s box office, Monday-Friday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
