Jekyll island deer

Jekyll Island officials are holding their fire on a proposal to use professional sharpshooters to reduce the deer population on the island state park.

The Jekyll Island Authority's governing board voted Tuesday to order further study on whether white-tailed deer seen in abundance on the island are putting too much strain on its plant species. Board chairman Richard Royal said that "no population control" measures will be taken until the study is finished.

A staff report last summer estimated Jekyll Island has far more deer than it can support and recommended a single option — hiring federal government sharpshooters to thin the herd.

The plan horrified many island residents, who said killing deer would leave a bloody stain on Jekyll Island's reputation for wildlife conservation.
