The leader of Georgia's transportation agency plans to retire at the end of the month.

Department of Transportation spokesman David Spear says Commissioner Keith Golden will apply for retirement on Jan. 31.

Golden's departure comes as Georgia lawmakers consider how to fill an estimated $1 billion gap for infrastructure needs. Gov. Nathan Deal, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston all have urged lawmakers to take some action to address the state's transportation issues this year.

Golden was appointed commissioner in 2012 after working as an engineer and administrator within the agency.
