Fort Stewart Brigade Shuttered As Army Downsizes Its Ranks

The largest Army post east of the Mississippi River has shuttered one of its three combat brigades.
Commanders of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart folded the unit's flag for the last time during a ceremony Thursday. The brigade is one of several across the U.S. the Army is disbanding to downsize its ranks from 570,000 to 490,000 soldiers.
The 2nd Brigade had been active for 97 years and saw action in World War I. And its story isn't over. The Savannah Morning News reports Fort Stewart this summer will re-flag its 4th Brigade, formed in 2004, as the new 2nd Brigade.
Most of the brigade's 3,800 soldiers went to other Fort Stewart units, resulting in a loss of only about 900 troops.
