Herman J. Russell

One of Atlanta's most prominent African American businessmen has died.

Herman J. Russell passed away Saturday, at the age of 83.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Russell’s business career started at age 16, when he bought his first piece of land for 125 dollars.

His construction firm, H.J. Russell & Co. built some of the city’s most prominent buildings, from the Georgia Dome to the new international terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

In a statement, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said Russell shattered countless barriers and created opportunities for all, especially African Americans.

Russell’s family said he died after a brief illness.

His funeral is scheduled to take place Saturday, November 22 at St. Phillip's AME Church in Decatur.
