This weekend Middle Georgia kicks off its celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the musical and cultural contributions by Hispanic and Latino Americans.

Each year Americans have set aside September 15th to October 15th to recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans in the United States. Most celebrations focus on celebrating their rich heritage and unique culture. Our goal is to bring the Hispanic Community together and expose the variety of Latin Cultures to Mainstream America.

DJ Magico, also known as Moises Velez stopped by GPB Macon to talk about the events surrounding the month. He’s creator of Que Pasa, the Spanish language newspaper in Middle Georgia. He also hosts a radio show on 1280am in the afternoon.

Here is his list of must do events:

SECOND SUNDAY FEATURING DALMATIAN & ANTONIO RODRIGUEZ (SEPTEMBER 14TH)
Free live music concerts are back in the Corridor with the return of the Second Sunday Concert Series in Washington Park! From April through October, on the second Sunday of the month, from 6-8 p.m., bring your picnics, blankets, chairs, families and friends to Washington Park for College Hill's signature community event.

ANNUAL MIDDLE GA HISPANIC MONTH CELEBRATION:
Smiley’s Flea Market in association with QuePasa, Middle Georgia’s only local Spanish newspaper, presents the Annual Middle Georgia Hispanic Month Celebration. The celebration will be held September 28th from 12 noon to 6 pm at Smiley’s Flea Market.

Each year the event continues to grow exponentially. Different acts will include everything from Clowns to Salsa to Panamanian dancing and singing. Everyone is invited to experience this spectacular event.

The celebration’s main event is Billboard Music Chart’s Latin Top 100 artist, and Norteño Music Specialist, Grupo Control, a Mexican group based out of Houston, Texas. They bill themselves as “Los Reyes de la Cumbia”, “The Kings of Cumbia.” Founded by Sergio Alberto Degollado and José Guadalupe Degollado from Control, Tamaulipas, Mexico, the group made its full-length album debut in 1999 with Cumbias Sin Control on the EMI record label. Subsequent albums include: Control, Todo Bajo Control, Controlandote, Los Reyes de la Cumbia, Lo Nuevo y Lo Mejor, Recordando a Rigo Tovar, Mas Control, and Controlmania.
