For the first time in its 26-year history, the Savannah Music Festival will feature a full-scale opera in its 2015 festival season.

The opera will be co-produced with the Savannah Voice Festival and will feature the Savannah Philharmonic.

Organizers say the opera will partially serve as an 80th birthday celebration of Sherrill Milnes. Milnes is America’s most-recorded opera singer and co-founder of the Savannah Voice Festival, along with his wife Maria Zouves. Zouves says she’s excited that for the first time ever, all three organizations will be working together.

“We see that there’s a lot of strength in what we can all bring to the table and combining our efforts we can really impact the operatic world.”

Philharmonic Director David Pratt says when an artistic opportunity like this presents itself, you can’t say no.

“They’re hungry, they’re looking for this and I think it’s also really good for the city to see three arts organizations come together and work together in some sort of collaboration.”

The festival will present Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica March 20 and 22.
