Macon Mayor Robert Reichert says polluted riverfront land downtown can still be developed. Former Mercer University President Kirby Godsey abruptly withdrew his plan for a major condo, hotel, and office development there earlier this month.
Godsey says the city and the mayor underplayed the extent of the contamination, but Reichert says that was not his intention. "I have tried not to point my finger. If there is blame, it’s my assuming that he knew because it was a matter of public record."
Riechert says most of the 10 acre property is still viable with minor remediation. He says if Godsey’s group no longer wants the property this may prompt another developer to come in and deal with the issues, making the property work for another project.
