Prosecutors in Bibb County say they've received results of a GBI investigation into state Senator David Lucas.
The Macon Democrat allegedly choked the 14-year-old grandson of his wife's political opponent during a campaign melee in August. Lucas denies the charges.
In a statement released Friday, Bibb County District Attorney David Cooke said he "will not be rushed to judgment" in deciding whether to pursue charges.
Complete statement from D.A. Cooke:
Today, the GBI sent its final investigative file to my office regarding the allegations that Senator David Lucas assaulted a 14-year-old child. The file contains numerous reports and witness interviews prepared and compiled by the GBI, as well as the case file prepared by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
We will review this file the same way that we would in any other case. In conducting this review, our only purpose will be to determine whether or not there is sufficient evidence to show that Senator Lucas has committed a crime.
Although the community and everyone involved deserves to have the decision made in a timely manner, we will not be rushed into to making a hasty decision. The allegations are serious, so the review must be thorough and the decision must be just and based only on the evidence.
Once our review has been completed, we will determine whether or not criminal charges are warranted, and I’ll announce the decision at that time.
