A Mercer University business incubator is moving from campus to downtown Macon. This is part of Mercer’s ongoing effort to engage with its surrounding community.

Bear’s Garage is Mercer’s social entrepreneur incubator. It opened last year to help foster new businesses with a social mission. Mercer is bringing it downtown by partnering with

NewTown Macon, a nonprofit downtown development group. Thomas Glennon, director of Mercer’s program in social entrepreneurship says Mercer is interested in partnerships with the community, like the Center for Collaborative Journalism. "Campuses tend to be silos, they don’t interact with the community very well, and that’s why we are so grateful for the journalism programs to start here, because they meet people in the real world."

The Bear’s Garage and NewTown Macon will host monthly meetings, starting Tuesday at 6pm at NewTown’s office at 479 Cherry Street for students and budding entrepreneurs in the community who want to create a business.
