As thousands of Macon-Bibb residents head to the polls Tuesday to elect officers for the first consolidated government, several election investigators will visit polling sites across the county.
The Georgia Secretary of State's office says it is investigating mistakes made during early voting with several voters being placed in the wrong districts or being given the wrong ballots.
But, Jared Thomas, spokesman for Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office, says their main purpose will be to make sure Tuesday’s election goes smoothly. "There’s guidance we can provide as far as state election board rules, if there are questions that ever came up or the election code, but as far as jumping in and shutting down an election or something like that, there’s just no apparatus legally for the Secretary of State’s office to do that. That would have to be done by a judge."
Thomas says it is standard procedure for investigators to be on hand at elections across the state.
