Elite Army Rangers stationed in Savannah are being recognized by commanders for bravery in combat while serving in Afghanistan.

Several Rangers who returned from deployment overseas earlier this year were scheduled to receive medals during an award ceremony Thursday at Hunter Army Airfield.

They are assigned to the Savannah-based 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, which has deployed soldiers to Afghanistan 17 times since the war began in 2001.

Army officials said awards being presented included one Bronze Star medal for valor, five Joint Service Commendation medals for valor and three Purple Hearts.
