Trayvon Rallies Continue This Weekend

Demonstrations continue this weekend in major cities across the country and Georgia in the wake of the not guilty verdict in George Zimmerman’s murder trial.

“Justice for Trayvon” rallies are scheduled to start at noon Saturday outside of federal court buildings in Atlanta and Augusta.

Friday in Houston County, community organizers are holding a “Candles Up For Justice” vigil on the lawn of the Houston County Annex Building. Organizer Fenika Miller says the goal is to break the spirit of division in the community. “We want people to know that it’s not just a black and white issue or just about Trayvon Martin and how we felt around that verdict. It’s about standing united against injustices of all manner.”

Several other cities across the state held prayer vigils and marches earlier this week.

Meanwhile, in an unusual move, the Justice Department announced Wednesday that it is collecting feedback from Americans for its investigation into whether to file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman. People can e-mail if they have thoughts on how the department should proceed.
