David Cook has been sworn in as the next secretary of the Georgia Senate.

Cook took the oath of office Tuesday during a ceremony at the Capitol. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle administered the oath and praised Cook's character and dedication to the Senate.

Cook spent his early career working as an aide in the Office of the Secretary of the Senate and counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee. He most recently served as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Community Health under Gov. Nathan Deal.

Senate President Pro Tem David Shafer says there was a broad consensus that Cook had the skills and temperament for the job, which includes serving as custodian of bills, records and official documents.

The office also records votes, distributes daily calendars and tracks legislation.
