Georgia Department of Natural Resources officials say a portion of a public fishing area in southeast is scheduled to reopen this week.

Department spokeswoman Melissa Cummings says the Evans County Public Fishing Area at Bidd Sands Lake is scheduled to reopen June 1. Officials say a dam at the fishing site was being compromised by tree growth and erosion, and was repaired through tree and stump removal, slope rebuilding and other structural improvements.

Officials say the lake has been stocked with largemouth bass and sunfish.

Department officials say the Evans County Public Fishing Area sits on 372 acres east of Claxton and attracts more than 5,000 anglers each year.

Claxton is about 50 miles west of Savannah.
