This fall Mercer University in Macon will update its campus worship experience for students.
For as long as anyone can remember, Mercer has held chapel services every Wednesday morning at 10:00am. But Craig McMahan, the university’s minister and Dean of the Chapel, says attendance has plummeted since chapel stopped being mandatory. "Where two or three are gathered Jesus said, and that’s about the extent of it" he joked during a recent conversation.
Respondents to a campus survey said 10:00am on Wednesdays isn’t convenient. Instead most preferred 9:00pm on Sundays which is what Mercer will begin doing this fall.
McMahon says they are also planning to host podcasts of faith-related interviews with Mercer faculty.
