University of Georgia officials have announced the school will extend some benefits to domestic partners similar to what married couples receive.

UGA President Michael Adams says the school will offer dental and vision insurance to domestic partners of UGA employees. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports employees will pay for the benefits and the school will not use any state funds to cover the costs.

Adams first announced he was looking to offer benefits to domestic partners in late-November after sending a letter to University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby.

Adams is set to retire at the end of June and will be succeeded by Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jere Morehead.
