Macon, Ga. — The Bibb County School Board is set to meet Tuesday evening to approve a reduction in work force. The vote comes one day before their deadline. On May 15th certified employee contracts will automatically renew.
Board members took a tongue lashing from many parents and teachers during last week’s meeting to talk potential staffing cuts.
Now it is decision time.
Retired superintendent and current board member Wanda West says "It’s very painful when it is clear that a total community and even all of the staff has no idea of what it takes to run the school district and that we put the needs of the children first."
Board member Tom Hudson says "We are trying to heal and do what's in the best interest of the district. The primary concern is to get through the budget process and do what’s fair and equitable across the board for the district as a whole."
The board is working to shore up an $18-million budget shortfall.
