Officials at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are asking travelers to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure times.

Officials say impacts of automatic federal spending cuts on TSA staffing levels may have led to wait times of up to 70 minutes Friday. Airport spokesman DeAllous Smith says of the airport's 22 checkpoint lanes, only 13 were being used.

Aside from the staffing shortage, Smith says the airport — which typically sees 45,000 travelers per day — saw about 55,000 travelers on Friday.

Officials say extra customer service representatives have been stationed along checkpoint lines to try directing travelers to the shortest line within the security checkpoint area.
