Authorities say a gunman is accused of opening fire on motorists as they traveled through Columbus on a Georgia interstate, but the motive is still unclear.

Police said officers responding to the scene cautiously approached a vehicle on the side of Interstate 185 Monday afternoon, but they couldn't tell if there was anyone inside. Police said the suspect had his seat reclined.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Wayne Smith said the officers spotted the suspect inside the vehicle when they got up close. Smith said he brandished a weapon, so officers shot him.

The suspect was taken to the Medical Center in Columbus for treatment of at least one gunshot wound to his shoulder. He was expected to survive.
