The publisher of the Telegraph of Macon is stepping down, and his move comes at a challenging time for the newspaper.

Like most papers, the Telegraph has seen its circulation shrink dramatically in recent years.

George McCanless nonetheless made ambitious changes during his four years at the helm, moving his newsroom to the Mercer University campus and forging a three-way partnership with Mercer and GPB.

But there have been cutbacks; two staff members were laid off this month, and there are ongoing furloughs.

McCanless is taking a new job as CEO of the United Way of Central Georgia.

He did not return calls, but in a statement said, "I have always felt that the newspaper and United Way were both very important community institutions with complementary missions."

His last day at the paper is January 11th.
