State transportation officials are requiring a $1,000 fine daily from a contractor for not completing a bridge on time.
The contractor, United Contractors, did not meet the scheduled completion date of November 30 to finish the Diamond Causeway bridge to Skidaway Island.
The fines will continue until the bridge is completed.
A statement released by the Department of Transportation says relations with the contractor will continue.
A proposal has been made by the contractors which is being reviewed.
According to the statement, the DOT has not received an official request for an extension of the project completion date.
A progress report from the DOT in August slated November 30 as the completion date, with an expected completion date of October 29.
The final completion date is defined as July 31, 2013 with an expected final completion date of March 18, 2013.
An updated progress report from September 30 lists the expected completion date as "to be determined."
Problems arose last February when a pot bearing issue was not resolved, leading to the DOT not paying for girders and bearings.
By request of the DOT, haunch girders were to be placed in a certain position which lead them push into the deck slab.
According to an email from United Contractors Project Manager Donald Anderson, the haunch girders rotated against their expected direction.
The transportation department insisted on the particular placement which resulted in the detrimental results.
