The Dougherty County School System has received two letters from the Georgia Department of Education questioning $167,000 in Title 1 Part A expenditures from fiscal 2011.

The letters seeking more documentation arrived one month after the school system reimbursed the state more than $134,000 for unallowable Title 1 expenditures for fiscal 2012.

The state department has also notified Dougherty County Superintendent Joshua Murfree that the county may not draw down any of its funds for fiscal 2013 until the state department has reviewed and approved all purchase orders, receipts and other documentation for reimbursement.

Murfree said the letters present an opportunity to improve some procedures and practices of the past.

Among the questioned expenses are $21,000 for travel and nearly $13,000 for classroom wiring.
