Georgia’s Food Inspections Based On Risk

The greater the risk of contamination at a food plant, the more often it will be inspected under a new system being rolled out in Georgia.

Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black said his department is in the process of overhauling its food inspection program.

Previously, Georgia food inspectors aimed to inspect each food manufacturing facility once every six months. An audit this summer found that goal was not met. In May 2011, only 51 percent of the state's roughly 740 licensed food processing facilities had been inspected in the last six months.

Black said his department has been working since 2011 to change the system so manufacturers are inspected based on their level of risk. Food inspection officials estimate that effort will be complete within a year.
