Gov. Nathan Deal has selected state Rep. Christian Coomer as a House floor leader responsible for shepherding Deal's legislative agenda through the General Assembly.

Coomer said Thursday that he takes the assignment "very seriously."

A lawyer, Coomer represents that Cartersville area. The Republican lawmaker will join Deal's current team of floor leaders, which includes Rep. Amy Carter of Valdosta and Rep. Matt Hatchett of Dublin.

Coomer's appointment comes after one of Deal's former floor leaders, Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville, decided to run for the open 9th District Congressional seat. Collins won the Republican primary and will face Democrat Jody Cooley in November's general election.
