Experts and advocates for issues facing the world's oceans are gathering for a weeklong conference in Savannah.

The 2012 Savannah Ocean Exchange opens today. The event brings together industry leaders, conservationists, academics and government specialists to swap ideas. It also includes events for the public including a film festival, art exhibits, fishing trips and a beach party on Tybee Island.

Speakers will include James R. Mancham, former president of the Republic of Seychelles, an independent island nation in the Indian Ocean. Mancham is scheduled to give an address on the growing geo-political importance of the Indian Ocean.

Events connected with the Savannah Ocean Exchange will continue through September 22.
