John House has been elected the Republican nominee to challenge Democratic Rep. Sanford Bishop in west Georgia.

House, a consultant from Midland, defeated Columbus medical supplies executive Rick Allen in a runoff election Tuesday to win the GOP nomination in the 2nd Congressional District.

With 94 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial returns showed House with 55 percent of the vote. The Republican rivals were forced into a runoff after neither earned more than 50 percent of the vote in the July 31 primary.

Bishop of Columbus is seeking an 11th term representing the district, which also includes Americus, Albany and Bainbridge. He has faced tough GOP challenges in the past, but his newly redrawn district is now majority African-American.
