Georgia's oldest city is taking a step into the future of transportation.

Savannah on Wednesday will open its first public charging stations for electric cars. Mayor Edna Jackson and other city officials were to attend a ribbon cutting at the parking garage where the stations have been installed.

The garage has set aside three parking spaces designated for electric cars only. Drivers will be charged the normal parking rates. The juice to power their cars is free.

Savannah officials say they have added the city's charging stations to a national database used by electric car owners when they plan trips.

The parking garage is located in Savannah's downtown historic district, where Georgia was founded as the 13th British colony in 1733.
