Fire Department Audit

Members of the Columbus City Council are expressing concerns about minority recruitment and policies regarding drunken driving following an audit of the city's fire department.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports that the council on Tuesday night discussed issues raised by the six-month internal audit. The review of the Columbus Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services was done by Columbus Internal Auditor John Redmond.

Redmond reported that the department has made improvements in its minority numbers since 2008. Councilor Mimi Woodson questioned whether the department is trying hard enough to get more Hispanic employees.

The councilors also discussed the city's policies regarding drunken driving charges in response to a past case involving a fire department employee.
