A Republican state lawmaker has introduced a bill that would limit abortion in Georgia, with narrow exceptions, after a pregnancy reached 20 weeks.

Currently, abortion is not permitted starting in the third trimester unless it's done to protect a woman's life and health.

Republican Rep. Doug McKillip's bill would limit abortions at 20 weeks unless necessary to protect a woman's life. Mental distress would not count.

After 20 weeks, doctors would also be required to end pregnancies in a way that provided the best opportunity for the fetus to survive unless doing so would seriously threaten the health of the woman.

The bill has not yet been assigned to committee.
