Downtown boosters in Macon are finding innovative ways to fill empty storefronts. They’re giving away $50,000 to start a new business.

The Macon Mogul competition invited people to submit plans for a new business downtown. A group of judges chose a winner from 20 finalists. That business gets a free year's rent and donated services from lawyers, accountants and marketing experts.

A Savannah store called. “Tailspin” that sells specialty food for pets won and will open its third location in Macon. Jeff Manley is the Co-owner.

“The first year of a business is especially, really nerve wracking in the sense that you’re trying to get customers. So, an award like this is fantastic, I think for any business.”

Macon gained an Urban Mainstreet designation from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs in September. Officials say they will watch the Macon Mogul competition to see if it can be replicated other places.
