Buford Makes National Top 10

Grayson, Valdosta and Camden County are each ranked in various national polls, but Buford has entered the CNN/SI national poll at No. 10 in the latest poll. Buford has won four straight Class AA state titles and is undefeated again with three players in the latest edition of the Score 44. ... Stephenson, East Paulding, Colquitt County, McEachern, Sandy Creek, Hillgrove and Lowndes also make appearances in various national polls. ... Colquitt County is finally getting a week off after six straight weeks of regular season games and a scrimmage one week before that. The Packers host Tift County before Lowndes comes to Moultrie on Oct. 14, one week after the Winnersville Classic. ... ML King will travel to Valdosta to face the Wildcats this Friday night. The Lions will be trying to return the favor of a road victory that Valdosta laid on them last season when Malcolm Mitchell and Jay Rome sparked the Wildcats at Hallford Stadium. ML King QB Jonquel Dawson will need to avoid DE Michael Wakefield, who had six sacks in a game earlier this season. ... In a huge Area 1-AAAAA volleyball showdown, No. 4 Walton swept No. 5 Lassiter, but the match was closer than the sweep indicated. Kelly Murphy contributed 13 kills in the Lady Raiders’ victory while Isabella Haswell contributed with 23 assists in the match. ... Brookwood’s Brandi Jones struck out nine Archer batters while allowing just six hits in a complete game win that helped Brookwood win its second straight Region 8-AAAAA regular-season title. Taiylor Rinehart and Ambree Muller each contributed a pair of RBIs in the Broncos’ 6-2 victory. Mandy Blackwell scored twice for Brookwood. ... Mountain View’s Tim Hardy was named the Atlanta Falcons high school coach of the week.
