Ga. Applies For More Race To Top Money

Georgia is applying for more federal "Race to the Top" money, this time for early learning.

Erin Hames, deputy chief of staff for Governor Nathan Deal, said Thursday the state has filed a letter of intent with the federal government that it will apply for the money.

The Obama administration announced in May that states could compete for part of $500 million aimed at encouraging better coordination and clearer learning standards for early education programs. It's the third round of the U.S. Department of Education's "Race to the Top" competition.

Georgia won $400 million from the competition last year.

Hames said Deal also wants to explore merging the state's prekindergarten program with its federal HeadStart program to streamline resources and reach more children.
