Weather forecasters say more above-average temperatures are in store for Georgia, with a heat advisory issued for much of the state and an excessive heat warning in effect in some southeastern areas.

The National Weather Service says highs around the state are expected to be in the 90s to about 100 on Wednesday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mountains are expected to be in the 80s.

Slightly cooler weather is expected on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the high in Athens was 100 degrees, with 96 recorded in Columbus, 97 in Macon and 95 in Atlanta, where the record for the date is 103, set in 1980. The average for the date in Atlanta is 89.
