Work is set to begin on a two-phase expansion of medical facilities in Albany as Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital expands its gastroenterology capabilities.
Johnny Sturkie, senior project manager, tells The Albany Herald that site preparation work on the $30 million expansion is expected to begin Monday.
Hospital CEO Joel Wernick says the expansion will expand the hospital's presence in northwest Albany and will expand services in the digestive diseases field.
He said the center will make it easier to recruit good gastroenterologists and will provide added convenience to an area of the region that is growing.
Wernick says the money for the expansion will come from "hospital surplus funding" and that the hospital won't need to take on bonds or other forms of debt to finance the project.
