DeKalb County school board members have approved a sweeping redistricting plan that will move thousands of students and close eight schools.

School officials have said the plan, which was approved at a school board meeting Monday night, is needed to remove thousands of empty seats and generate more state funding for the system.

Officials said Monday night that the move will free up an estimated $12.4 million a year.

The school system, which serves about 100,000 students, is the third-largest in the state.
