Lawmakers are formally urging the Georgia Department of Transportation to be better prepared for the next snow event.

Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Jeff Mullis has co-sponsored two urging resolutions. One asks the DOT to create a list of private contractors ready to go clear roads next time around.

Another would let local governments take care of the state roads that run through their towns.

"If they feel like they want to get a main thoroughfare quicker than the state would, this would give them the ability to do that," Mullis says. "Or the state could just contract with them and say 'hey just do the state roads in your city and we’ll compensate you for that.'"

Mullis says cities currently don’t have the right to clear state roads which frustrated clean up efforts during January’s snow storm.
